Winning the War on Cancer

It’s official: We’re winning the war on cancer!

The American Cancer Society recently announced that the number of US cancer deaths decreased for the second straight year.

One of the largest drops among major cancers was in colorectal cancer, due to increased colonoscopy screenings. This simple and effective procedure detects polyps and allows doctors to remove them before they turn cancerous. Every man and woman should undergo a colonoscopy every 10 years beginning at age 50 if you’re white and 45 if you’re black.

Our success against colon cancer is evidence that public and private policy can save lives. When government and private insurance groups started covering colonoscopies, the number of people getting screened shot up, saving thousands of lives.

Now that we have seen the positive effects of colon cancer screening, we must do even more to make it affordable and accessible to all.
